Sleep is a natural, recurring state of reduced consciousness and decreased responsiveness to external stimuli. Despite its ubiquity, the necessity and underlying mechanisms of sleep remain enigmatic. Since time immemorial humans have been in an incessant quest to create machines that are an exact copy of human intelligence, a quest formally known as Artificial Intelligence (AI).
However, despite their purported uber-mensch-like abilities, none of these AI models, including current LLMs like ChatGPT, are considered to be a true Artificial Intelligence. This is because these machines so far have not shown any definite signs of one major component of what makes a human a human - the ability of being conscious or sentient. This ability, philosophers and scientists have agreed for centuries, is the quintessential key stone that gives rise to the other myriad of our abilities that uniquely define human intelligence, like being emotional, compassionate etc.
In this talk AI Research Scientist Mithun Paul has introduced an extremely cutting edge field known as Quantum AI. Specifically, he talks about his recent research in Quantum Natural Language Processing (QNLP), a sub-field of Quantum AI where Quantum Computers are being taught to understand human language from a bottoms-up perspective, just like a human kid learns while growing up. More importantly, he shows that these QNLP models are showing eerie signs of something very unexpected: Yes, some early traits that these machines just might be conscious. He argues, through this recent research into creating QNLP, humans might have accidentally stumbled upon the ultimate holy grail of humanity’s quest in AI: creating machines that are conscious and sentient.
